Are mobile VoIP users looking for more ways to stay connected?

17 Nov 2014

Given the advantages of VoIP network, the number of mobile VoIP users has been increasing every day. Almost everyone today flashes a trendy smartphone that supports high-end communication features. This flexibility has given them the choice of using mobile VoIP services on their phones to reduce the monthly phone bills. It only got better with many mobile VoIP phone users having access to Wi-Fi hotspots as they need not worry about exceeding bandwidth maximums under their existing cellular data plans.

The story so far has been good as mobile VoIP users get to save significant costs on long distance calls or international calls without having to compromise on call quality and efficiency. But the question is whether these mobile VoIP users are contended with existing VoIP features from their service providers or are they looking for more. Well, a recent survey indicates that many users are looking for more advanced features from service providers in order to have an enriched user experience. Taking this into confidence, many service providers started making efforts to integrate advanced features onto their mobile applications.

The following are the basic mobile VoIP features supported by most service providers:

  • Caller ID
  • Caller ID With Name
  • Voice Mail
  • Fax
  • Call Waiting
  • Call Forwarding
  • Call Blocking
  • 3-Way Calling
  • Last Number Re-dial
  • Local Number Portability
  • 411 Directory

But now, the advanced features they need from service providers are:

  • Instant Messaging
  • SMS
  • Call Transfer
  • Telemarketer Blocking
  • Enhanced Voicemail
  • Repeat Dial if Busy
  • Toll Free Numbers
  • E911 Service
  • Anonymous Call Block
  • Multi-Ring
  • Do Not Disturb
  • Speed Dialing
  • International Blocking and so on

Though service providers have succeeded in identifying the above high-end features, it now becomes a challenging task for them to integrate onto their mobile VoIP applications. Also, it may not be wise to have all features onto a single application as it might increase app complexity and affect its usability. Apart from integration complexities, it might be a costly affair for service providers to provide all-in-one VoIP services. Thus, they need to segregate the most liked features by worldwide mobile VoIP users and accordingly offer them.

Begin with messaging tools!

Though there are many advanced features, the most popular ones are IM & SMS messaging tools. They are used by audiences of all ages, given the probability of many having the smartphones. If mobile VoIP calling offers them inexpensive long distance calls, IM & SMS could offer still cheaper means to stay connected from anywhere at any time. Thus, service providers have to consider making IM & SMS features available to mobile VoIP users on a priority basis in order to not lose out on the market.

By offering users the flexibility of messaging instantly, businesses can stand chance to build strong customer base and thereby improve their revenue rapidly. This is particularly relevant as most of the communication (chat, promotions, ads, etc.) done today is through messaging tools. So, businesses can expect an increased volume of traffic in the years to come.
